Agonizing Gum Surgery – Are These 4 Types Really Necessary?

Guess what?

You DON’T have to brush your teeth…

Just the ones you want to keep!

When it comes to maintaining supreme oral health, brushing and flossing on the daily is a no brainer. The scary truth is that when you don’t make oral health a priority, it opens the door for a slew of problems and diseases.

These issues may require you to need to have gum surgery – and that is certainly not something to smile about.

Will you need gum surgery?

You’re about to find out!

Who Needs Gum Surgery?

Gum surgery may be required for people who develop periodontal disease, which is a bacterial infection that infects the gum tissue and causes:

  • inflammation
  • redness
  • swelling
  • loss of bone around the teeth

The shocking truth is that 80 percent of adults in the United States have some form of periodontal disease (as reported by The National Institute of Health)!

Periodontal disease starts when bacteria collects in your mouth, attaches to your teeth, and then grows… and grows… and GROWS. This growth forms a biofilm that is commonly referred to as dental plaque.

When plaque is left on your teeth, it causes the nearby gum tissue to become irritated and inflamed. As a result, you may develop gingivitis, which is an early form of gum disease but can turn into a serious form of gum disease if left untreated.

To keep your teeth healthy and safe from gum disease, it is vital that you fight this bacteria by flossing and brushing at least twice daily. This cleans the teeth and stops plaque from forming at the gum line of your teeth.

On the other hand, when proper oral hygiene is NOT practiced, gingivitis will progress and your gum tissue will become more inflamed. You may also notice bleeding and “pockets” developing in your gums, which allows periodontal disease to develop.

Does Gum Surgery Cause Pain?

After gum surgery, many people have mild to moderate pain. This pain can easily be managed with pain relievers you can get at your local store.

If swelling occurs, ice can be gently applied to the area. Sometimes, the dentist may prescribe antibiotics to minimize the risk of any infection from developing.

It is expected that the gums will be sensitive following gum surgery. However, if excessive bleeding or swelling occurs, it is best to immediately contact your dentist with any problems.

Types of Gum Surgery

If you have developed gum disease, receding gum lines, or other issues with your gums, your dentist may recommend surgery to treat and fix these issues.

There are a variety of procedures available depending on what your treatment plan requires:

Pocket Reduction

Crown Lengthening

Soft Tissue Graft

  • Also known as gingival flap surgery.
  • The surgeon folds back the gums and removes bacteria.
  • The gum tissue is then secured against your teeth (instead of letting it grow back itself)
  • Also known as gingivectomy.
  • Gum tissue overgrowth is removed from your teeth.
  • Makes teeth appear longer.
  • Used for cosmetic effects as well as to treat gum disease.
  • The periodontist folds back the gums and removes bacteria that causes diseases.
  • Bone grafts, tissue-stimulating proteins, or membranes are then inserted to encourage gum tissue regeneration.
  • The aim it to get the gums to fit securely around your teeth again.
  • Also known as gingivoplasty.
  • Gum tissue is taken from elsewhere in your mouth and attached to your gums.
  • Replaces gum tissue that has receded or damaged by gum disease.
  • Used for cosmetic purposes and improves the appearance of your teeth.
  • Also treats gum disease because it covers exposed roots

If you are unsure if you need gum surgery or which type of gum surgery is best for you, a thorough examination by your dentist can determine what you need.

Depending on how advanced your gum issues are, your dentist may refer you to a periodontist, who is a doctor that specializes in treating gum disease.

Several alternatives are also available, such as the gingivectomy alternative known as Bil Veneers from Brighter Image Lab.
